Why The Proof is in the Proofing!

Promotional merchandise is one of the most powerful marketing tools. At Swizzle, WE DO MERCH, and whether it is for branded apparel, drinkware, or event giveaways, the merch represents your brand, and may last sometimes for many years after the event. Since we are in the business of doing things the right way, there is a responsibility attached for us to get it right the first time, every time. For this reason, PROOFING is a very important part of the process when creating your merchandise.

What Is Proofing?

At Swizzle the process of proofing begins BEFORE the digital or physical sample of your promotional product goes into full production.  After partnering with you to get the design right, we create the PROOF and will then send it to you for approval.  The proof that our team created will show how your logo, text, colors, and the layout will appear on the finished item. It allows for a chance to catch errors, confirm accuracy, and ensure the final product aligns with everyone’s expectations.

But WHY is Proofing Important? 

Proofing is a final checkbox.  It is also a process in safeguarding BRAND IDENTITY, your reputation and your pocketbook.  A misspelled company name, incorrect logo usage, or mismatched colors can undermine professionalism and credibility. Once an item is printed or produced, those errors are permanent and they may be seen by hundreds or thousands of people. Here are 3 main reasons why Proofing is Important:

  1. Proofing Ensures Accuracy Across Campaigns – Promotional merchandise is often tied to specific campaigns, events, or time-sensitive messaging. Incorrect dates, outdated taglines, or wrong URLs can render products unusable before they even make it to your audience.
  2. Proofing Ensures Expectations Align With Reality – Digital designs don’t always translate exactly the same way onto physical products. Colors can appear different on fabric versus paper, logos may need resizing, an embroidered design may not be perfect on some materials.  In addition to these things, certain details may not reproduce well on small scales, making it hard to see.
  3. Proofing Helps Prevent Added Expenses –  When there is an error after production, there are potential Reprint Costs, potentially added Production Delays, Additional Shipping Fees, and products that cannot be used and must be discarded. Everyone knows how much we dislike the thought of adding to landfill waste!

The PROOF we NEED! (TIPS for What to Look for When Proofing a Design)

– While this list is not exhaustive, the following are some of the most frequent things to look for:

Make sure Logos are current and correctly placed

Check that the Fonts and text are accurate and readable

See that Brand colors are consistent with guidelines

Inspect the Designs and make sure they look balanced and intentional

The PROOF is in the Final Product!

While Proofing may seem like just a step in the process, it is an important and impactful step. While Swizzle plays a vital role in preparing proofs, it is also a SHARED RESPONSIBILITY.  When a client “signs off” on the design, we have already looked it over and over.  It is within the realm of possibility that we have missed something that is ultimately important to you, our customer.  So it is recommended that the proof be carefully reviewed by ALL stakeholders in the project.  This includes the marketing, branding and leadership teams within your organization. We suggest never assuming something is “probably fine” and blindly signing off.  If something looks off, we encourage and welcome the opportunity to make sure it’s right before production.  Your team at Swizzle desires nothing more than to do YOUR MERCH right the first time!
